HIV prevention and protection through medication.
What is PrEP?
PrEP stans for pre-exposure prophylaxis. (Prophylaxis means an action that will prevent infection or disease). PrEP is available as a daily pill or a long-lasting injection.
If used correctly, PrEP can lower your chances of getting HIV exposure. PrEP has limited side effects.
Is PrEP for me?
PrEP is best for people who have a risk of being exposed to HIV. Think about PrEP if you:
- Are in a relationship with someone that has HIV.
- Have unprotected sex with people whose HIV status is unknow.
- Are a man who has sex with other men and who has had an STI in the past six months.
- Have, the past six months, either used needless to inject drugs or had sex with someone who injects drugs.
How do you get PrEP with us?
- Talk with one of our HIV counselors or health care providers today. They can help you decide if PrEP is right for you.
- If you qualify, you will need a consultation with one of our medical providers and they will explain in detail and will complete a lab exam the same day.
- Prescription will be written based on medical provider evaluation and patient consent of treatment.
- Some health insurance plans may cover PrEP. Some areas have programs that can help pay for PrEP.
Use PrEP correctly.
- Take PrEP exactly as prescribed. If you miss doses, your risk of HIV infection goes up.
- Get tested every three months. If you become HIV positive but continue to take PrEP, the HIV virus can become resistant to the drug in PrEP and will be harder to treat.
